Red wines from Campo de Borja are often very powerful and full-bodied. Peña Zuela Vendimia Seleccionada 2023 is, in its own way, much the same, yet Bodegas Ainzon still manages to hold back some of the most forceful flavours. To a large extent, that is a considerable strength for this wine, traditionally made from Garnacha.
The wine, which, as the name suggests, is only produced in selected vintages, is warm, dark-fruited and packed with richness and character. The spices are present too, but there is a balance that makes it feel less heavy than many other Campo de Borja wines. Particularly at this price level, that is something of a rarity, because taming the intensity that builds in the grapes is no simple matter.
If you are looking for a Campo de Borja wine with power, weight and a thoroughly rich flavour, you may find this one a little disappointing. If, on the other hand, you often find Campo de Borja wines too powerful, this could be your way into learning to appreciate them. Peña Zuela Vendimia Seleccionada 2023 shows that it is possible to keep the price at a sensible level while creating a more elegant and balanced style from the Garnacha grapes grown here.
